The Red Lion Hotel

Horncastle,
Lincs.
LN9 5HT
Tel: 01507 523338

Now, this is one place you shouldn't miss, especially if the theatre company is in town. The Red Lion not only serves an excellent pint, the staff are very efficient and the locals friendly, but you can also stay here. It may not be "The Ritz" but it's a clean and friendly B&B. The 4 rooms (2 single & 2 double) are comfortable and the breakfast is tasty & filling. Breakfast's are from 9.30 A.M. to 12 noon. Main meals are also served from 12 noon to 9.30 P.M. - Mon to Sat and 4 P.M. to 9 P.M. - Sun.

The Lion Theatre is deceptively spacious, seating 96 people. The majority of plays are performed by the local "Horncastle Theatre Company", although other theatre companies have put on performances (Hull Theatre Company to name but one). The Theatre itself is part of The Red Lion but the props actually belong to the Company. A total of 7 productions are put on per year (1 of them being a pantomime). The Horncastle Theatre Club was formed in 1973 but renamed in 1983 to the name we know today. The Theatre buildings and stage were provided by Betty, Eric & Tim Benson, who financed and carried out the conversion and reconstruction work. The internal work was a massive undertaking by the Theatre Company members and their friends, financed by many local people. Names of some of the sponsors can be seen on the walls of the theatre. In 1984, a junior section of the Company was started, known as Young Stagers. Then, in 1988, the theatre was officially opened by Patricia Hodge. There was so much interest from the sponsors and locals on the opening night (10th December 1988), that 2 sittings had to be organised.
More community work is planned in the form of a mural on the wall leading to the theatre. It is hoped that 5th or 6th form pupils from the local Queen Elizabeth Grammar School will undertake this task.
Tea's, coffee's & soft drinks are available from the Lion Theatre bar. Alcoholic beverages are not served in this bar but can be purchased from the Public House bar.

The Horncastle Theatre Company and everyone else involved have 3 main aims:
1. To provide good, live theatre.
2. To encourage & develop members in the facets of acting, production and associated skills.
3. To maintain & improve The Lion Theatre.
